To help you explore alternative financing sources, here are helpful ideas to assist seniors in transition.
STAR+PLUS is a Texas Medicaid Managed care program for people who have disabilities or are age 65 or older. People in this program get Medicaid health-care and long-term services and support through a medical plan that they choose. For more information, call 1-800-252-8263.
Helps provide for the cost of long-term care beyond a predetermined period and is generally not covered by health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid. Check with your insurance company or agent about coverage you may be eligible to receive.
Veterans Services
The Veterans Administration reminds wartime veterans and surviving spouses of wartime veterans about a special monthly pension benefit called Aid and Attendance. This special pension benefit may be available to wartime veterans and surviving spouses who live in senior housing. Although this is not a new program, some are not aware of their eligibility in the program.
VA Funding
Veterans or spouses of veterans may be eligible for the Aid & Attendance Benefit offered by the Veteran's Administration. If a veteran or spouse of a veteran (even if deceased) served at least 90 days of active duty with one day during a period of War, they may be eligible for assistance to help pay for assisted living.
Periods of War
World War I: April 6, 1917 to November 1, 1918
World War II: December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946
Korean Conflict: June 27. 1950 to January 31, 1955
Vietnam Era: August 5, 1964 (2/28/1961 if "in country") to May 7, 1975
Persian Gulf War: August 2, 1990 - date to be determined

When trying to obtain benefits, have your DD214 form or medical records with you. Records can be accessed through the national archives.
